Mellon Humanities for All Times Grant

Whittier College will use the $1.5 million Mellon Foundation grant to support the full implementation of its newly revised Liberal Education Curriculum by embedding humanistic modes of inquiry across nearly all general education first-year courses, breadth requirements, and interdisciplinary fields. The initiative directly connects these humanistic skills to career preparation, community engagement, and social justice by integrating project-based, applied (or engaged) learning, life labs, and undergraduate research opportunities for all students. The latter grant activity dovetails with Whittier’s hallmark features of interdisciplinary and experiential teaching and learning alongside scholarly research practices.

Below you will find resources related to the Mellon Humanities for All Times Grant including various applications for funding opportunties.

Part 1, Poet Perspectives, of “Mellon Humanities for All Times” is an opportunity to hear about and discuss the opportunities available to faculty, staff, and students through the Humanities for All Times grant funded by the Mellon Foundation.  This $1.5 million grant will fund course revision, new courses, on- and off-campus student internships, summer faculty/student research projects, and professional development.  Members of the grant steering committee will be on hand to answer questions about the humanistic modes of inquiry at the core of this grant, the available opportunities, the application forms and process and the financial incentives, as well as to discuss your ideas for possible projects.

Registration is not required. Snacks and light refreshments will be served.

Part 2, Poet Practices, of “Mellon Humanities for All Times” is a workshop designed to help faculty as they complete the applications for the programs and opportunities offered by the Mellon Humanities grant.  Do you want to discuss how to best explain how your proposed course module, or your proposed summer undergraduate research project, engages with and employs the Humanistic Modes of Inquiry?  We can help.  Do you want us to help you think about ways to sustain your innovations over time?  We can offer suggestions.  Would you like to brainstorm with colleagues the way in which your proposed course revision might introduce students to humanistic modes of inquiry such as case studies, oral histories, or textual close reading and interpretation?  We’d love to hear your ideas.

Lunch will be provided. Registration required for catering.
