Personal Response Systems & Classroom Engagement Tools:

  • TurningPoint Clickers: clickers are small handheld devices used in the classroom to collect student responses to interactive tests and quizzes.

  • Poll Everywhere: similar to Clickers, can be used for live audience participation using mobile devices

  • Kahoot: educational gaming application used for easy to create, share and play learning games or trivia quizzes

  • Piazza: free web-based platform for Q & A

  • Word: Microsoft’s word processing software

Maps:

  • My Maps (Google): create custom maps for personal use or sharing, users can add points, lines, and shapes on top of Google Maps

  • Google Earth: computer program that renders a 3D representation of Earth based on satellite imagery, program can also be downloaded to mobile devices and users may use the program to add their own data

  • Zeemaps: create maps from location list, crowd source, or spreadsheets then publish and share interactive maps

  • StoryMaps (Esri): ability to combine maps with narrative text, images, and multimedia content

  • StoryMap (JS): application developed out of Northwestern University’s Knightlab to help tell stories on the web that highlight the locations of a series of events 

  • Timeline (JS): open-source tool that enables anyone to build visually rich, interactive timelines using Google spreadsheets


Social Annotation:

  • Diigo: research tool and knowledge-sharing with annotation capabilities, highlighter, sticky notes, archiving, bookmarking

  • Hypothes.is: annotation plugin to hold discussions, read socially, organize research, and take personal notes

  • Wikipedia: free online encyclopedia, created and edited by volunteers around the world and hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation

  • Genius: world’s biggest collection of song lyrics and musical knowledge added by artists, scholars, fans, verified by editors (similar to Wikipedia) can add to collaborative annotation assignments 

  • VideoAnt: web-based video annotation tool for mobile and desktop devices

  • Distant Viewing Lab: software that uses and develops computational techniques to analyze visual culture with video clips 

  • Citation Builder: Research Organizer:

  • Zotero: easy-to-use tool to help collect, organize, cite, and share research

  • Easybib: website that helps create citations and bibliography formatting for MLA, APA and Chicago/Turabian citation styles
